This module is normally taught over the course of one week in the summer term and is designed to foster interdisciplinary collaboration between social scientists and computer scientists. It is our aim that you acquire a good understanding of the key elements in planning and carrying out independent research projects. We aim to have a number of invited guest speakers on this module, and you will have the opportunity to discuss and critically evaluate different methodological approaches and learn how to draw on these approaches as a starting point for your own research. To give you a taste of particular research methods and approaches, we draw on recent examples of media and cultural research done here at Lancaster, and encourage you to explore their theoretical and practical implications. To explore research practice in this discipline, we look at textual and discourse analysis, visual analysis, ethnography and participatory approaches, but place a strong emphasis on engaging with issues of identity, differences, power and experience in the hyper-complex media and cultural environments that we live in. Many different methods are used in media and cultural studies, and that variety is reflected in this module. This module is designed to introduce you to contemporary methodological issues, key approaches, practical techniques, and case examples relating to the study of media and culture. Popular culture, audiences and media practices associated with celebrityĬontemporary digital media cultures, and their circulation and consumptionĮmbodiment, differences, politics and identities amidst media changeĬritical Methods in Media and Cultural Studies You will also engage with analytical work on specific media platforms, products and practices, ranging from photographs and search engines to newspapers and reality TV.Ĭoncepts of culture in relation to images, commodities and brands We will read and discuss recent and formative writings in cultural and media studies, allowing you to develop an understanding of key concepts such as subjectivity, platform, materiality, commodity, difference, value and power, and how they help us make sense of contemporary social life. This module introduces approaches to critical analysis of key forms of contemporary media and culture such as commodities, celebrities, platforms and different media forms and environments. It will engage you in analysis of complex processes of inclusion and exclusion and equip you with the tools to critically evaluate educational structures, policy and practices to both examine and challenge inequalities. ![]() This module will provide you with the opportunity to interrogate social justice issues within society and explore how these play out through the education system, developing and enhancing your knowledge and understanding of inequalities. With the freedom and time to freely explore my options stress-free for the first time in my life, I plan to focus on looking for opportunities to help people and create things where profit and "paying the bills" is no longer my primary motive. Once I realized how powerful reducing expenses was in building a self-sustaining personal financial situation, I comfortably upped my savings into the 80% range and am on course to retire from my (first) career later this year at the age of 37. That specific graph pushed me in a new direction a few years ago. ![]() His blog (and Jacob's earlyretirementextreme) have added quite a bit of value to my life. Once a full-time salary was no longer necessary to pay the bills, with the extra (and exceedingly rare) resource of time he built an impressive (and quite helpful) blog and has a carpentry gig on the side. The kind of frugality that MMM promotes - spending your resources wisely on things of lasting value rather than blowing them on things you don't really need or could do yourself - is not at all incompatible with forming a successful business. He simply has so much money (more than $1 million, I believe) relative to his annual spending (about $25k/yr) that he can afford a higher volatility portfolio compared to someone with "just enough" according to a 3-5% withdrawal rate. He's pretty non-specific but tends to advocate a stock-heavy portfolio with some bonds thrown in. Once you're withdrawing, it starts to matter more and IMHO this is where MMM is a bit deficient in his investment advice. What more could you ask for!?īut yes, the principle is that your investment returns start to matter less in the accumulation state the higher your savings rate because even very high rates of return are still dwarfed by the money you're adding. ![]() He struck it rich ethically, through hard work, cleverness, an offering real services of value to others, and now in his retirement, he teaches others to do the same and is a pillar of his local community. In my estimation, there are very few people who can judge MMM. That's adding value to society to me.Īlso, he ended his engineering career early by starting a homebuilding business and still does handyman work on the side, often for free now that he is financially independent and doesn't need the money. He's done a good thing for a lot of people just by describing his lifestyle and showing people how to do it. Note that MMM actually rents out a house, which I consider to be a business offering value to society. Now you are going to critiCize for not offering value to society? The basic point is that if your savings rate is high, you don't need to rely on savings compounding to reach FI.Īs far as "successful business," investing in eg the s&p 500 is owning a small part of many successful businesses.Ĭompare to the pp where only 1/4 is in successful business and 1/4 is in non productive assets (gold) and 1/4 is in loans to the government. ![]() Horizontal/vertical axes are OK, but what about the multiple curves? It works to reduce and prevent bullying, cyberbullying and other digital abuse, educates against homophobia, LGBTQIA+ discrimination, racism and hatred, and deters violence in schools, online and in communities across the country. You may need to watch the videos more than once to get. STOMP Out Bullying is the leading national nonprofit dedicated to changing the culture for all students. The video 'Stomp Out Loud' with the percussive/dance group Stomp, is used to show students an example of the sequences they are going to create. That may be the point, one suspects: For all its appeal, this HBO spec works best as a lavishly funded advertisement for the stage show. Please watch the videos and fill out the Stomp Out Loud Forms. Students develop patterns and combinations of movements into repeatable patterns. This drawback comes through most clearly at the close, when an encore featuring the audience getting in on the act is likely to leave viewers at home feeling left out. Ultimately, though, the visceral charge that drives the stage show can’t be captured on film, where immediacy is naturally lost. With virtually no dialogue and no narration, the show lets the concept speak for itself, and only a fussily directed recurring segment featuring a quartet of nervous card sharks promises more than it delivers. It also allows students to consider all of the aspects involved in creating a STOMP performance. This worksheet allows students to recognize and identify musical concepts such as ostinato, call and response, and echo within the movie STOMP Out Loud. Using ordinary objects to make extraordinary sounds, Stomp Out Loud is a unique combination of percussion, movement, and visual comedy. They could have a big future in musicvideos. This STOMP worksheet is a perfect accompaniment to use with the video STOMP Out Loud. In August 2012, Stomp contributed to the musical segment of the 2012 Summer Olympics closing ceremony in London. Camera then travels into the chef’s kitchen, where a cast of characters finds all manner of percussive possibilities: Vegetables are chopped, pots are clattered, pans are scrubbed in a virtuosic, ear-pleasing cacophony that’s captured by directors Luke Creswell and Steven McNicholas in a single, spectacularly choreographed Scorsese-style take.Ĭreswell and McNicholas are the English creators of the “Stomp” stage show, and their direction of the special, not surprisingly, has a rhythmic flair that complements the hoofing. In 2007, Stomp Out Loud opened in Las Vegas at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino with an expanded cast and performed inside a new 28 million theatre specifically created for the production. An alley routine finds the Stompsters putting together an impromptu concerto for basketballs and Dumpsters, interrupted by the angry howl of a chef. Segments culled from a live perf before an audience in the Brooklyn Navy Yard are interspersed with staged vignettes that take the show’s rhythm-of-urban-life stylings a step further. ![]() Refer to the corresponding code below and the above dataset for details about how the images have been adapted. Your glyph contours are drawn inside the advance width (but may also overhang outside the width). If a kerning pair is defined between two glyphs, the 2nd glyph’s placement is shifted by the kerning pair value. Then, the 2nd glyph is placed at the text cursor. If several classes applies to one kerning pair will the last kerning class in the list be applied. This means that you can kern all letters against all other letters in a class and still fine tune the space for glyphs that need to be kerned differently. Kerning of individual pairs will always be applied after kerning of classes. The letter x will be kerned against c, d and e instead of just c. ![]() Move the marker with the mouse or keyboard arrows. Note that the marker is thicker to indicate that a group of letters will be kerned and not just one pair. Type the first letter in the pair ('x') and click on the class. Click on the AV button to create a new kerning class. Type some combination of the letter that should be kerned and letters from the class (xc, xd, xe). Type the word you want to kern (excellent). The space between x and all letters in the class will be adjusted at the same time. This example shows how to kern letters with a bowl facing to the left ('c', 'd', 'e') againt x. This might be exactly what you want but in most cases is spacing classes a better alternative (it handles both spacing and kerning). If several letters needs to be kerned against a glyph is it possible to create a kerning class (a group of letters) and adjust the space for all glyphs in the class with the same amount. Kerning all pairs separately can be a very time consuming process. You can switch kerning pars with Ctrl + Arrow Key on Windows and Command + Arrow Key on Mac, Repeat this process for all letters that need kerning. Click on the small marker between the letter 'x' and 'c'. Open the kerning tab (Ctrl+K on Windows and Command+K on Mac) There is also a spacing tab if you want to change the space for all letters and not just one pair. This tutorial shows two ways of adjusting the space between letters in the kerning tab. ![]() The way this is done is by applying a camera – with full control over zoom factor, etc – and by using Z-layers to place elements forward or backward in relation to others. Now, CrazyTalk Animator 3 may be called a 2D animation app, but the animations you create can be made to appear in a 3D environment. ![]() This allows you to create motion from 2D photos, resulting in smooth facial animations and talking expressions by morphing the images, but there’s always a limit to the amount of elasticity before it starts looking unnatural. A morph-based head uses a projection of a face image onto a surface with the dimensional and protruding shape of a face. For example, a head that is composed of sprites of a face and different facial features lets you move all those features independently. Sprite-based animations look more cartoonish but allow for more “natural” expressions of motion. The Paddington bear PNG relied on morphing. Sprites, by the way, is the second animation method within the app. Then, by importing the layered result into CrazyTalk Animator 3, the artwork’s layers are translated into sprites and you can start animating. The round-trip PSD pipeline lets you create characters of which you put the moving parts on different layers. My review version – Pipeline – provided me with a fully functional PSD in-and-out solution that allows you to keep using your familiar design environment for character creation and animated content development. The result is that you can create almost any animation from static elements. That is all good and well, but it doesn’t even scratch the surface of this 2D animation tool.ĬrazyTalk Animator 3 comes with 2D character templates and character motion libraries – you may call them ready-made animation components – which you can combine with 2D bone rigs, facial puppets and – a feature that allows you to create tutorials as much as hilarious cartoons – audio lip-syncing tools. The image originally had a white background, but by removing it and then importing it into CrazyTalk Animator 3, I could control its extremities and head. I tried this with a PNG image of a Paddington bear stuffed animal. With CrazyTalk Animator 3, you can bring an image or a piece of vector art into the application and create an animated figure by applying bouncy “Elastic Motion” effects, using “bones”. This, the developer says, is the world’s easiest 2D animation software that enables all levels of users to create professional animations with the least amount of effort, and I agree – up to a point. OneNote has a good feature of video recording and dictation tool. It has a free version with 60MB storage, but all the features can be used only in its paid version. OneNote is free of cost, and all its features can be used without any payment to the application.Įvernote is not free. Let’s discuss the top 8 comparisons between OneNote vs Evernote: OneNote The paid version of Evernote integrates the formulae with a browser extension and give the expected results. One Note works with integrated formulae inside the application, and when we give the equation, results are generated. We can do mathematical calculations in both OneNote and Evernote.OneNote also provides sharing option, but we cannot chat with users or share the notes’ link via mail. Also, we can generate links for each note and send them in different mail or in chat. For example, we can share the notes by right click-share and then write comments on each note or chat to the users with whom we are sharing the notes. Collaboration of notes can be done in both OneNote and Evernote, but the features are good in Evernote.Evernote has different features to arrange notes but does not have folder hierarchies. The notes are arranged in sections and pages where each page can be tagged. Considering the organization of notes, OneNote stands apart as it can tag to different names and to different users the notes and can be arranged in folder hierarchies.Though the downloaded and online version is the same for Evernote, one disadvantage is that it will ask us continuously to upgrade to the paid version if we are using the free version of Evernote. This makes users difficult to follow the same pattern online and offline. If we are using the downloaded version of OneNote, its layout differs from the online version.Tags in Evernote can be used only to give titles to notes, and if we have a greater number of notes, we cannot give names to each note, and this becomes messy in the end. The notes will be arranged in an easy manner for the user to search and modify the same. In OneNote, we can add tags to all the notes, be it reminders, dates, passwords or names to each note. Tag options are present in both OneNote and Evernote. Therefore, different users prefer both applications in various aspects. But in Evernote, the free storage option is only for 60MB, and if the user needs more storage, the premium account can be taken which offers 10GB storage. ![]() OneDrive cloud storage should be opened by the users initially, and then they can use the storage for free. If a user needs to take notes and record videos and store them in the cloud storage, OneNote is preferred as storage options for OneNote is huge. ![]()
